Still Holding Strong: The M2M Program Shows Lasting Results 8 Months Later

By Adnan Kussair

What if the results from your last fitness challenge actually stuck around? That’s the question the latest follow-up to the Mindless to Mindful (M2M) program answers, and the findings are better than expected.

Back in our first deep dive into the M2M intervention, we explored how this innovative 8-week program helped participants lose fat mass and build better self-regulation through consistent movement, group coaching, and mindfulness tools. The results were impressive at the end of the program. But the real test came months later.

The Long-Term Impact

At the 8-month follow-up the level of sustained progress was surprising. Most interventions struggle to produce results that last beyond a few months. M2M appears to have avoided that drop-off:

Participants maintained meaningful fat loss.

While there was some weight gain after the program ended, it did not return to baseline levels.

Self-control and self-compassion declined slightly

But both remained higher than they were before starting M2M.

Individuals Outperformed Teams

Another surprise takeaway was that participants who completed the program individually outperformed those who joined as part of a team.

Individuals regained less fat, held on to stronger self-control, and maintained better self-compassion scores. Researchers suggest that individuals may have relied more on internal motivation, while teams may have depended on external accountability that faded once the structured program ended.

Why This Matters

Short-term results are easy. Long-term change is what matters, and that is what the M2M program continues to deliver.

The program used straightforward techniques like goal setting, self-monitoring, and group support to foster self-regulated behavior. These strategies not only helped participants meet physical activity guidelines, but also gave them the tools to sustain their progress.

For coaches, health professionals, and anyone looking to create lasting behavior change, this follow-up is a reminder that change is possible when people are equipped with the right structure and mindset.
